Both are established musicians with international careers. Both have played with the greats of the world, and both have successfully broken new ground. And now Asja Valcic and Klaus Paier have brought out a recording sensation: 13 pieces for accordion/bandoneon and cello. The cornerstone for this duo was laid several years ago, when the celebrated accordionist, bandoneon player and composer Klaus Paier set standards playing solo, duo (with Gerald Preinfalk), with his trio and in collaboration with the Vienna Radio String Quartet. The Croat Asja Valcic belongs to the latter ensemble. She appeared as a soloist under the baton of well-known conductors, made music with renowned contemporaries and played on many chamber music CDs before turning to jazz. Together Paier and Valcic have brought into being a musical cosmos full of percussive electricity, internalized passion and deliberate purism that manages to leave room for improvisation. Paier’s diverse compositions carry expressive titles like “La Pirouette,” “Singing Bird,” or “Histoire d’ amour.” These are chamber music dialogues – tender and gripping, passionate and cool, playful and strange – that draw on diverse musical forms and traditions while remaining free from pathos. These compositions hint freely and directly at French musettes, Argentinian tangos, Balkan dance, purple-haze rock and jazz, and yet each piece is, above all, a genuine Paierish musical invention, intricate and marked by gravity, precision and intensity. The pieces are carried off with passion and a lighthearted ease by the musical soul mates Klaus Paier and Asja Valcic. (Annika Schroeter) Klaus Paier, accordion, bandoneon Klaus Paier began tentatively exploring the accordion at the age of eight. “The sound of the instrument and the transparency of playing it was always a priority for me. But you can only accomplish this by means of very specific co-ordination of the bellows and specially customized arrangements. This was the only way I was able to liberate the instrument from its characteristic fuzziness of phrasing and density of sound”, Klaus Paier describes his playing style. He studied accordion, jazz and composition at the Klagenfurt conservatory, constantly experimenting during this time in various styles (classical, jazz, contemporary music) and, as of 1993, consistently carrying out his own projects. When asked which form of music has influenced him most strongly, Klaus Paier answers, “Jazz and tango gave me the freedom to develop my own language of music”. Klaus Paier later discovered Tango Nuevo and, from there, the bandoneon, an instrument he is now using more and more often. Paier sees tango in itself more as an element of style. But the historically evolved European sounds of the accordion have also featured in his playing and his compositions. Through his collaboration with a string quartet, and inspired by his in-depth study of Bela Bartok, Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, the classical component came to play an important role in Paier’s musical explorations .The accordionist processes experimental and contemporary elements above all in a duo with saxophonist Gerald Preinfalk. His playing is characterized by the resoluteness and intensity with which he presents his projects. Emphatically he frees himself of all instrumental expectations, thereby liberating, as it were, the accordion from its historical burden and penetrating completely new spheres of music. He himself aims to express a positively charged polarity in music: attraction and rejection, weight and lightness, loudness and quietness, openness and self containment, strict discipline and passionate explosiveness, enthralling his audience in concert tours in Israel, France, Italy, Sweden, Poland and many other European countries.  Klaus Paier ranks among the great European accordionists with a worldwide reputation.

Asja Valcic, cello

Asja Valcic studied at the Zagreb Music Academy with V. Despalj (Zagreb/Croatia), and at 18 obtained her state diploma. She also studied with L. Terraspulsky (Massachusetts/USA), N. Schahovskaja (Moscow/Russia) and K. Georgian (Detmold, Germany). Graduation with Soloist's Diploma. She attended master classes with B. Pergamenchikov and B. Greenhouse.
She has played chamber music with G. Schulz (Alban Berg Quartett), H. Schoneweg (Cherubini Quartett), I. Bolton (Brodsky Quartett), I. Bieler (Melos Quartett), A. Engegard (Orlando Quartett), T. Brandis (Brandis Quartett), and many others. As a soloist she performed with the Zagreb Philharmonic, Belgrade Philharmonic and the Westfälische Kammerorchester, conducted by the likes of Kazushi Ono and Zubin Mehta. In 1995 she won the "Concours international de jeunes concertistes de Douai" in France. She recorded Sonatas of Shostakovich and Schnittke for Jugoton (1989) and Serenades of Martinu for d+g (German Record Critics' Award in 1998). Valcic taught at the Music Academy of Zagreb (Croatia), at the Dartington International Summer school of Music/England, in Chioggia/Italy and at the University of Music Detmold/Germany. Since 2004 she is a cellist of radio.string.quartet.vienna, since 2008 she is playing in duo with Klaus Paier.
